Yesterday The Women Veterans Organization of the CSRA hosted Stacey Abrams, candidate for Governor of Georgia. This event, a forum for Veterans living in and around Augusta, GA was organized to give Veterans like myself, a chance to have an intimate conversation with Stacey. The goal was to give her chance to inform the Veteran community of her background and stance on Veterans issues and to hear our concerns first hand.
Never did I expect there would be protest. I definitely didn’t expect to be confronted by a protester–especially one who was insistent on telling me what Veterans cared about and what we needed.
The type of rhetoric and hate he spewed was incomprehensible. The audacity of this man to yell, cut me off, point in my face and outright disrespect me and the uniform is mind-boggling.
This ladies in gentlemen is what the phrase “racism disguised as patriotism” looks like in the flesh. It is the reason NFL players like Colin Kaepernick were and still are kneeling.
This is what we as African-Americans are subjected to on a daily basis–
Even when I informed him, I was in fact an Air Force Veteran, his tone and stance did not change.
As a Veteran, the exact group he claimed to support, did I not deserve to be heard?
I spent 8 years on active duty in the United States Air Force as an Intelligence Operations Analyst from 1998 – 2006 and have continued to serve this country as an AmeriCorps VISTA and through multiple Veteran Service Organizations. Currently I serve as the Director of Community Development for the Women Veterans Organization of the CSRA and as a Senior Ambassador/ Board Member of the Women Veteran Social Justice Network. I am also the Co-Founder of Camp Shero, a social advocacy nonprofit that focuses on the needs of Women Veterans living with PTSD.
I am very well versed on the needs of Veterans, especially Women Veterans and I’m beyond exhausted with people who continue to use US as a cover to racism and their prejudices.
IF YOU HAVE NEVER WORN THE UNIFORM-
RAISED YOUR RIGHT HAND IN HONOR OF SERVICE TO THIS COUNTRY–
YOU CAN NOT SPEAK FOR US!
Janice Jamison, United States Air Force Veteran
“There’s a lot of racism disguised as patriotism in this country. And people don’t like to address that. And they don’t like to address what the root of this protest is”
